Dear 5 year old Lulu

Dear Lulu,

You are 5!  We went outside on a Sunday afternoon in March to take your birthday pictures.  You look so pretty with your Princess Aurora hair and beautiful dress.  I was glad to get a few really cute pictures of you.  Usually you close your eyes, or squint, as soon as you see the camera!

Lulu, you think you are so grown up.  You tell me all the time that you are getting old and that you will soon be as big as I am.  You probably think that any day now you will be getting married and moving on with life.  Luckily that is still very far away.  You still love to cuddle and get special attention.  I'm afraid that will wane as you get older, so I'll take as much of it as I can right now! When asked if I would like to put you into full-day Kindergarten in the fall, I always say no.  I only have one more year where you will be home with me every day, and I don't want to loose that!

You will love Kindergarten though!  You are very social.  You have an amazing memory. You also love learning and are very smart.   You are already sounding out letters and putting them together to write words!  Language is not always your forte though.  You often speak English like it was a foreign language, putting the verbs in the wrong place.  English does have so many irregularities and exceptions.  But don't worry.  You love to read and I know you'll get the hang of it. You have loved every activity we have signed you up for. You loved dance and soccer and swimming! And you can hardly wait until I start teaching you piano.

At 5 years old you love to look girly.  I let you choose your own outfits and you wear a skirt to preschool almost every day.  You love having your nails painted.  You like to have pretty hair too, although you hate it when I brush your long hair. I asked if you'd rather cut it, and you were tempted, but you like it long because you look like Rapunzel.  People tell me all the time how beautiful your hair is, so thick and blonde and long.

At 5 years old your favorite things are friends, your dolphin pillow pet, school, your leapster, coloring and painting, writing, dress-ups, barbies and ponies, riding your bike, and making your baby brother laugh.  No one can make him laugh as hard as you can.  You love pbskids.  You would probably watch tv most of the day if I let you.  You can't go to bed without your blankie and your cow.  You are a great eater!  You love to help me cook too. You love to help others and are always wanting to take treats to our neighbors.

One of my favorite things about you is that you are still always willing to help me.  I ask you often to do me favors and you always do it for me!

I also love how you are sweet with Hammer.  Of course you have your days where you two don't get along, but you are such great friends too. One time your friend was pretending Hammer was an icky monster boy and was running away.  We were walking you into preschool that day and she didn't want to let him in. You stood up for your brother.  You told her, "It's just my brother," like she was crazy. Then you told Hammer in such a sweet voice, "Come on buddy, you can come in."  I was so proud. I hope that never changes.

Now, you do have some times where Dad and I think you might drive us crazy, and it's usually at night.  Sometimes when it's time for bed you whine and dawdle and cry because you are afraid you will have a bad dream.  This keeps Hammer awake and teaches him bad habits.  And when you wake up in the night you want to be babied.  If we don't give in then you can scream and cry for a good hour, waking everyone else up.  I'm not sure what triggers this.  We have days where you are so obedient and at bedtime you just jump in bed and go right to sleep, and then a few bad days in a row.  It cycles, with there being a lot more good days before the bad days come up again.  Maybe you are just pushing the limits to see what you can get away with.  When you see that Dad and I are consistent and follow through with consequences, you give in and stop pushing so hard.

But Lulu, you are so loved.  I will take the few crazy things you do any day.  You have been such a joy in our lives.  Your name means light and I think it is so fitting.  Your smile, your laugh, and your love of life, always make my day brighter.

I love you,

Mom

Dear 3 year old Hammer

Dear Hammer,

I wanted to take some new pictures of you for your 3rd birthday!  I think they always turn out better outside, and it was finally nice enough weather to venture outside for your photo shoot.  You are so photogenic.  And so funny.  I had to include the pictures that made me laugh on here so that others can get a little taste of your personality.
At 3 years old you still love your Elmo and your cars.  Those are your favorite!  You also love watching PBS kids with Lulu, taking baths, throwing things, tickles, playing outside, and the neighbor's cat.  You are very witty and funny.  I love it when you input your own words into songs just to see my reaction.  You love using your imagination.  And you love to be mischievous.
You are a handful Mister.  Sometimes I don't know if you do naughty things because you purposely want to disobey, or if you are just curious and do things without thinking about the consequence.  I hope it is just your way of exploring your world and learning how things work.
And even though you often try my patience and make me second guess my mothering skills, there are numerous times every single day where you make me feel like I AM doing something right! You have been comparatively easy to potty train.  You amaze me with how smart you are.  You are a wonderful eater too.  Usually you go right to bed and sleep through the night.  You love to help me with the dishes.  You love your siblings.  I love it when you want me to hold you.  You wrap your skinny little arms and legs around me and lay your head on my shoulder.  You often tell me that you love me. Basically, you are amazing.
Today while we were at the park, you ran off.  I searched the toys for a minute, expecting to see you climbing the stairs, or running across the bridge. When I couldn't see you I started to walk around the toys and then into the parking lot. Finally I saw a woman holding your hand and bringing you to me.  You had been in the busy street.  I was embarrassed and thanked her.  Then I was angry with you.  I didn't spank you or raise my voice- too much, though I'm sure you could tell I was very upset.  I hope you know that it was just because I could have lost you.  What would I have done if my Hammer was taken from me, because I hadn't been watching you closely enough?  My world would have come to a screeching halt.  I would be devastated.  I need you.  Looking at these pictures of you tonight really reinforced these feelings.  I am so glad angels watch over you and I still get a chance to be your mommy.
I love everything about you, and I wouldn't change a thing.
Except for your running and escaping impulses.  And maybe the coloring on expensive things in the house. Let's work on those two things for now.
I love you Buddy.

Lucky

I haven't been the chipperest mom around lately. It seems to be directly proportional to the lack of sleep I had the night before.
It's also something to do with being cooped up inside since forever.
Cooped up kids get curious, and mischievous (picture our computer screen covered in pencil markings, and our cd player jammed with cornbread, and vaseline smeared on my mirror, and...)
And kids that are cooped up fight with each other more.
And kids that don't want to listen to me and are testing their boundaries pushes my buttons.
And there's always the issue with bodily functions. Seriously. Poop in underwear multiple times a day just makes me ornery.

I try though. I try to keep my cool and not yell.
Sometimes I want to cry. Or scream. Sometimes I just want to laugh at it all.
And it's really hard to stay focused on the big picture.
The big picture is this: I have 3 little people in my care. They are still so little. A 3 year old is not expected to know everything and to behave perfectly. He's 3! And 5 years old isn't much older. I need to cut them some slack sometimes, and just step back and see how little they are. I am the one who nurtures and teaches and loves. They need me, and trust me, and love me.

I do always come back to reality at night when I see them tucked into their beds, so innocent and calm. So beautiful.
I just want to remember that a little more during the day too.
Maybe we need more of a routine? Maybe we just need to get outside more? That is right around the corner, I'm hoping. Blogging about how darling they are always helps too, as does just looking at the pictures I have taken recently.
So its time to focus on the positive and remember again just how lucky I am.

My good-helper
Thoughtful
She looks out for Hammer.  If she gets a treat anywhere, she always gets one for him too.  Or splits it with him.
Creative
Artistic
Loves to serve. She always wants to give our food away to our neighbors
Amazing memory
Girly
Friendly
Independent, sometimes that's good and sometimes it's not.
Other times still wants to be my little girl and let me take care of her
She can make Baby laugh harder than anyone else.  She adores him, and he adores her.
Loves to be loved

So smart with language
Hilarious. He is always trying to make someone laugh
Along with that, he's already witty!
My good sleeper
My good eater (all of my kids are actually)
Imaginative
Friendly
Loves "monster tickles"
Full of energy, but can also quietly play cars by himself for forever.
Wants to play with Lulu a lot more lately.

I can't see his sweet face and not feel happy.
He smiles at me all the time.  He even screams in joy when I pick him up.
Also a funny boy who already tries to make us laugh
So sweet and loving.  He wants to be held and loved most of the day
Loves the bathtub
Loves food, but nursing too
Wants to crawl and play with his siblings and do what they are doing.  Almost buddy!
Learning and growing so fast!

They really are such good, sweet kids.  I am so lucky!
